7 Amazing Benefits of Cabbage!

Cabbage is really easy to grow even in cooler climates...

Cabbage are amazing. It’s packed with nutrients, minerals and vitamins that help our bodies be healthy and it’s relatively inexpensive. I often get asked whether cabbage can be juiced, and the answer is YES. Almost all vegetables have the potential to be juiced! The cabbage family which includes Brussels sprouts and bok choy provides excellent sources of vitamin C, calcium, iron, and potassium.

Here are 7 essential nutritional benefits of cabbage.

1. Dithioltiones & Sulforaphane

Dithioltiones induce antioxidant and detoxification mechanism. Dithioltiones also have anticancer properties and increases the body’s production of glutathione. Glutathione is a great antioxidant and your body naturally produces it. Carcinogens from the environment like smoke or pollution can actually deplete your glutathione production. Sulforaphane also helps stimulate the production of glutathione.

2. Beta-carotene

I always thought that that only orange or yellow fruits and vegetables contain beta-carotene. But in actuality cabbage and other greens even if they’re not orange or yellow still contain the amazing beta-carotene. Beta-carotene has anticancer properties and may lower risks linked to heart disease.

3. Anthocyanins

Anthocyanins are responsible for the red color found in red cabbage. They are also very valuable antioxidants that help neutralize free radicals and the oxidation of molecules in the body.

4. Indoles & Isothiocyanates

Indoles and isothiocyanates may help against breast and prostate cancer.

5.  Vitamin C

Cabbage is packed with vitamin C. Vitamin C is important in neutralizing free radicals, regenerating vitamin E supplies, and improves iron absorption (WH Foods). To get the most vitamin C from cabbage you should juice it or eat it raw.

6. Detoxifier

Cabbage is great in helping the body detoxify and clear the body from toxins due to it’s ability to increase antioxidant defense mechanisms (Murray, 1992).

7. Coumarins & Phenols

Coumarins are amazing for blocking the reaction of cancer causing compounds.  Phenols also induce detoxification enzymes and have anticancer properties that help prevents the formation of carcinogens (Murray, 1992).
Raw cabbage cleans the waste from the stomach, improves digestion and reduces constipation. Raw cabbage also stimulates the immune system, kills bacteria and helps stimulate circulation.

Tips:

Goitrogens are found in raw cabbage and also broccoli. Goitrogens may actually slow down the thyroid. If you have thyroid issues you should consult with your physician before eating raw cabbage and broccoli.
Buy organic.

The Medicinal Uses Of Raw Apple Cider Vinegar

Posted by: Belinda Ford
What Is The Difference Between Clear Vinegar &
 Raw Apple Cider Vinegar?

Clear vinegar has none of the benefits of raw organic apple cider vinegar. Through its processing and distilling, it’s been stripped of everything beneficial and can be detrimental to your health due to the fact that it is dead instead of alive.

Only raw organic apple cider vinegar has the “mother of vinegar” that makes the vinegar so beneficial. The “mother” is made up living nutrients and bacteria. You can actually see it settled in the bottom of the bottle like sediment.

 MOTHER OF VINEGAR
The stringy mass of goop called the "mother of vinegar" is said to have exceptional healing properties as well. The "Mother of vinegar" is a term used to refer to the mass that forms on top of cider when alcohol turns into vinegar.

Chewing on a little of this slime every day is supposed to prevent most infectious diseases and keep germs and parasites from invading the body. It also refers to the cloudy substance that develops in stored vinegar. It is actually bacteria and yeast cells that have died. The presence of the mother shows that the best part of the apple has not been destroyed.

Vinegars containing the mother contain enzymes and minerals that other vinegars may not have due to over processing, filtration and overheating.

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR

It's a powerful detoxifying and purifying agent. It breaks down fatty, mucous deposits within the body.

By breaking down these substances it improves the health and function of the vital organs of the body, such as the kidneys, bladder and liver, by preventing excessively alkaline urine. It also helps to thin out the blood, which is important in helping to prevent high blood pressure.

Apple Cider Vinegar also promotes digestion, assimilation and elimination, all the while neutralizing any toxic substances that enter the body. Apple cider vinegar has been found to kill any harmful bacteria that may be found in certain foods.

When a mixture of apple cider vinegar and water is taken before a meal (particularly food served in restaurants or at picnics where the preparation or duration of food left uncovered and not refrigerated is questionable), it seems to prevent diarrhea or digestive upsets.

All about Licorice...

Great share from a friend.... Thanks Belinda
 http://mountainroseblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Licorice.jpg
Historical Roots
Native to southern Europe and parts of Asia, this much beloved “sweet root” legume is a member of the Pea Family (Fabaceae) and can be found in apothecaries across the world. Considered one of the most important medicinal herbs since ancient times, Licorice has been used throughout history as a demulcent to help soothe irritated membranes, support the immune system during viral infections, quell inflammation and allergic reactions, calm coughs, remedy adrenal fatigue, and as a sweet flavoring agent.
Glycyrrhizin is the sweet tasting chemical compound in licorice that has been measured at 30 to 50 times sweeter than sucrose. This sweet constituent can also exacerbate health issues for some folks, and as always, you should do your own research and consult with a healthcare professional to decide if an herb is right for you.
Traditional Preparations
Licorice root is used as a tea or tea ingredient, tincture, lozenge, or capsule. It is also used to flavor candies, soups and savory broths, tobacco products, root beer and other soft drinks. Whole sticks and slices can be chewed and are pleasantly sweet, although some find the flavor quite cloying and prefer it only when formulated with other herbs.
Herbal Curiosities
Among precious jewels and treasures, a fortune of Licorice root was discovered in King Tutankhamun’s tomb. The pharaoh requested the root so he could enjoy the popular sweet drink mai sus in the afterlife.

Best Plants for Bees

 Thanks for the share Naomi,

Who Happens to be a

"Self Reliant Network" Reader.

I love a great share don't you?

What are the best plants for bees?

http://www.themelissagarden.com/plants.html
What are the plants that bees love? And why should we care? Why should we make sure we plant bee friendly gardens? Because thanks to a mystery illness called Colony Collapse Disorder, they need all the help they can get.

Worldwide honeybee stocks have been waning since 2004 because of a puzzling illness scientists called Colony Collapse Disorder, which causes adult bees to inexplicably abandon their hives and their broods. However, bees also appear to be suffering from other ailments.

Colony Collapse Disorder has killed off the weakest colonies in recent years and parasites such as the varroa mite are threatening those that survived. Intensive farming techniques, pesticide drift and climate change are also being blamed for the sudden decline in the bee population. It could cause serious problems for agriculture and food production since bees are essential to pollinate many plants, including fruits and vegetables.

That is why we should care about attracting bees to our gardens!

GMO Crops Killing Bee's

Many GMO crops are engineered to produce their own pesticide (such as Bt toxin), while others have been created to withstand large applications of herbicides like Roundup. Both have had devastating consequences for pollinating species like honeybees.

Last week, 1,500 colonies of honeybees were destroyed in Campeche, Mexico from the fumigation of Monsanto's GMO crops nearby: http://www.theyucatantimes.com/2013/02/1500-colonies-of-honeybees-die-in-campeche/

Raw goat's milk offers many benefits

(NaturalNews) In western civilization, most milk consumption is in the form of pasteurized and homogenized cow's milk. Although such milk is portrayed as being healthy, it actually can lead to impaired health, including allergies, tooth decay, colic in babies, arthritis, heart disease, and even cancer. A much better choice is raw milk, and, though generally more difficult to find, the best raw milk of all is raw goat's milk. As the Journal of American Medicine states, "Goat's milk is the most complete food known."

Goat's milk is the most highly consumed milk in many other parts of the world and it is delicious as well as extremely nutritious. Goat's milk has vitamins, minerals, trace elements, electrolytes, enzymes, proteins, and fatty acids that are easily assimilated by the body. It is interesting to note that goat's milk is digested in 20 minutes; whereas, it can take up to 24 hours to digest cow's milk.

Pasteurization and homogenization are not what nature intended. These processes destroy valuable natural enzymes and nutrients that our bodies utilize to sustain health. They also alter food chemicals and make fats rancid.

Cow's milk and goat's milk differ greatly in their nutritional composition. Goat's milk does not contain the complex protein that stimulates allergic reactions, making it less allergic. It also helps to boost the immune system. Goat's milk alkalizes the digestive system and also helps to increase the ph level in the blood stream. Furthermore, goat's milk does not produce mucus and will not worsen allergic respiratory conditions such as asthma.

Goat's milk also contains less of the enzyme xanthise oxidase. When entering the blood stream, this enzyme can cause tissue on the heart to scar that results in the liver supplying more cholesterol in order to protect the heart. Arteriosclerosis can be the result of this mechanism. Additionally, homogenization of milk products has also been linked to heart disease.

People who are lactose intolerant may find goat's milk to be a good alternative source of milk. Goat's milk contains less lactose than cow's milk and passes through the digestive system more rapidly. Most lactose intolerant people have no difficulty tolerating goat's milk.

Additionally, raw goat's milk fights microbes, primarily due to the healthy medium-chained fatty acids it contains, such as capric and caprylic acids. It is very important to note that raw goat's milk is rich in selenium, a necessary bodily nutrient known for its immune strengthening and antioxidant properties.

Raw goat's milk soothes the digestive tract. People with conditions such as bloating, diarrhea, asthma, and irritability may very well be suffering from an allergic reaction to cow's milk. Raw goat's milk on the other hand can be comfortably consumed without triggering these allergic responses. Because of its effective acid buffering capacity, goat's milk has been used to treat conditions such as ulcers.

Children with problems digesting cow's milk may have a viable alternative in raw goat's milk. Goat's milk is a natural food that children can consume comfortably, even if they are sensitive to cow or other forms of milk. In fact, goat's milk is very similar to human milk. Children who drink goat's milk tend to remain more satisfied between meals and sleep through the night.

In conclusion, goat's milk provides excellent health benefits, is delicious and is well tolerated - as opposed to today's pasteurized and homogenized varieties, which are not only less nutritious and less tolerated, but also can be a precursor to poor health.

Carrots: baby or Not!

BY: Belinda Ford
Baby Carrots: or are they?

The following is information from a farmer who grows and packages carrots for IGA, METRO, LOBLAWS, etc.

The small cocktail (baby) carrots you buy in small plastic bags are made using the larger crooked or deformed carrots which are put through a machine which cuts and shapes them into cocktail carrots - most people probably know this already.

What you may not know and should know is the following:
Once the carrots are cut and shaped into cocktail carrots they are dipped in a solution of water and chlorine in order to preserve them (this is the same chlorine used in your pool).

Since they do not have their skin or natural protective covering, they give them a higher dose of chlorine.

You will notice that once you keep these carrots in your refrigerator for a few days, a white covering will form on the carrots. This is the chlorine which resurfaces. At what cost do we put our health at risk to have esthetically pleasing vegetables?

Chlorine is a very well-known carcinogen, which causes Cancer. I thought this was worth passing on. Pass it on to as many people as possible in hopes of informing them where these carrots come from and how they are processed.

How To Make Kombucha

What Is Kombucha Tea?

Kombucha starts out as a sugary tea, which is then fermented with the help of a scoby. “SCOBY” is actually an acronym for “symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast.” It’s very close cousins to the mother used to make vinegar.

The scoby bacteria and yeast eat most of the sugar in the tea, transforming the tea into a refreshingly fizzy, slightly sour fermented (but mostly non-alcoholic) beverage that is relatively low in calories and sugar.
The SCOBY

Let’s talk about that scoby. It’s weird, right?! It floats, it’s rubbery and slightly spongy, brown stringy bits hang from it, and it transforms sugary tea into something fizzy and sour. It’s totally weird. But if you take a step back, it’s also pretty awesome.

There are a lot of theories about why the bacteria and yeast form this jelly-like layer of cellulose at the top of the kombucha. The most plausible that I’ve found is that it protects the fermenting tea from the air and helps maintain a very specific environment inside the jar that is shielded from outsiders, aka unfriendly bacteria.

Probiotics?

Which brings us to the next question: what’s actually in kombucha? Kombucha is indisputably full of probiotics and other happy things that our intestines love and that help boost our overall health. Claims that kombucha cures things like arthritis, depression, and heart burn have less of a proven track record, but hey, our bodies are all different and I say go for it if it works for you.

I love it!

What is wrong with milk and why is it considered one of the top ten toxic foods.

BY: Larae Chambers
Thanks for letting me share this...  SRN

Recently I was asked what is wrong with milk and why is it considered one of the top ten toxic foods. Here is my reply...Read with an open mind and know I want the best for your families health.

And finally milk...I could write pages on this topic but will try to keep it simple. The product you purchase in the store is watered down, hormone infested, synthetic vitamins added, pesticides and herbicides infested, antibiotics prone, lactose removed, zero nutritional value crap.

Yes, I am a dairy farmer and this is what the FDA does to our milk. First they drive out all the little farmers so they can have large farm manufacturing facilities where thousands of cows are housed and fed CORN. These facilities do not feed grass, possibly hay. The milk is then pasteurized (cooked) at such a high heat that it literally kills all the beneficial vitamins, minerals, omega 3's that you need. They add these back in later.

I can't imagine the replacement vitamins are Better for you then the original ones. Then they homogenize the milk. this basically means making it look pretty for the customer, because who really wants to see cream actually float on top of their milk?

They do this by destroying the fat molecule in the cream so it doesn't float and instead mixes in with the rest of the milk, in destroying this molecule it makes it impossible for your body to digest. Therefore you don't get the important omega 3's fatty acid that is oh so beneficial! and somewhere in all this the milk also loses its lactose, natural sugar.

This makes the milk extremely difficult to nearly impossible to digest and I can't imagine why they have taken everything out of the milk.

This is why people are lactose intolerant, you'd be surprised to learn I have numerous lactose intolerant customers who can drink raw milk with great success! WHY? because its raw and natural the way God made it, full of everything your body needs.

Organic milk in the store is still destroyed by the pasteurization process but at least you can rest assured its Cows are more likely grass fed. no chemicals, pesticides or antibiotics and no GMOs.

Best for your health is raw milk with the cream that floats from the farmer in your county whom you can shake their hand and say thank you. I value what I do, and value each Customer, Parent and Child that I provide this product for. I am blessed.

19 possible uses for Cinnamon and Honey

Drug companies won't like this one getting around. Facts on Honey and Cinnamon: ~Frisky

It is found that a mix of honey and Cinnamon cures most diseases. Honey is produced in most of the countries of the world. Scientists of today also note honey as very effective medicine for all kinds of diseases. Honey can be used without side effects which is also a plus.
Today's science says that even though honey is sweet, when it is taken in the right dosage as a medicine, it does not harm even diabetic patients. Researched by western scientists:

HEART DISEASES: Make a paste of honey and cinnamon powder, put it on toast instead of jelly and jam and eat it regularly for breakfast. It reduces the cholesterol and could potentially save one from heart attack. Also, even if you have already had an attack studies show you could be kept miles away from the next attack. Regular use of cinnamon honey strengthens the heart beat. In America and Canada, various nursing homes have treated patients successfully and have found that as one ages the arteries and veins lose their flexibility and get clogged; honey and cinnamon revitalize the arteries and the veins.

ARTHRITIS: Arthritis patients can benefit by taking one cup of hot water with two tablespoons of honey and one small teaspoon of cinnamon powder. When taken daily even chronic arthritis can be cured. In a recent research conducted at the Copenhagen University, it was found that when the doctors treated their patients with a mixture of one tablespoon Honey and half teaspoon Cinnamon powder before breakfast, they found that within a week (out of the 200 people so treated) practically 73 patients were totally relieved of pain -- and within a month, most all the patients who could not walk or move around because of arthritis now started walking without pain.

BLADDER INFECTIONS: Take two tablespoons of cinnamon powder and one teaspoon of honey in a glass of lukewarm water and drink it. It destroys the germs in the bladder....who knew?

CHOLESTEROL: Two tablespoons of honey and three teaspoons of Cinnamon Powder mixed in 16 ounces of tea water given to a cholesterol patient was found to reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood by 10 percent within two hours. As mentioned for arthritic patients, when taken three times a day, any chronic cholesterol could be cured. According to information received in the said Journal, pure honey taken with food daily relieves complaints of cholesterol.

COLDS: Those suffering from common or severe colds should take one tablespoon lukewarm honey with 1/4 spoon cinnamon powder daily for three days. This process will cure most chronic cough, cold, and, clear the sinuses, and it's delicious too!

UPSET STOMACH: Honey taken with cinnamon powder cures stomach ache and also is said to clear stomach ulcers from its root.

GAS: According to the studies done in India and Japan, it is revealed that when Honey is taken with cinnamon powder the stomach is relieved of gas.

IMMUNE SYSTEM: Daily use of honey and cinnamon powder strengthens the immune system and protects the body from bacterial and viral attacks. Scientists have found that honey has various vitamins and iron in large amounts. Constant use of Honey strengthens the white blood corpuscles (where DNA is contained) to fight bacterial and viral diseases.

INDIGESTION: Cinnamon powder sprinkled on two tablespoons of honey taken before food is eaten relieves acidity and digests the heaviest of meals

INFLUENZA: A scientist in Spain has proved that honey contains a natural 'Ingredient' which kills the influenza germs and saves the patient from flu.

LONGEVITY: Tea made with honey and cinnamon powder, when taken regularly, arrests the ravages of old age. Use four teaspoons of honey, one teaspoon of cinnamon powder, and three cups of boiling water to make a tea. Drink 1/4 cup, three to four times a day. It keeps the skin fresh and soft and arrests old age. Life spans increase and even a 100 year old will start performing the chores of a 20-year-old.

RASPY OR SORE THROAT: When throat has a tickle or is raspy, take one tablespoon of honey and sip until gone. Repeat every three hours until throat is without symptoms.

PIMPLES: Three tablespoons of honey and one teaspoon of cinnamon powder paste. Apply this paste on the pimples before sleeping and wash it off the next morning with warm water. When done daily for two weeks, it removes all pimples from the root.

SKIN INFECTIONS:Applying honey and cinnamon powder in equal parts on the affected parts cures eczema, ringworm and all types of skin Infections.

WEIGHT LOSS:Daily in the morning one half hour before
breakfast and on an empty stomach, and at night before sleeping, drink honey and cinnamon powder boiled in one cup of water. When taken regularly, it reduces the weight of even the most obese person. Also, drinking this mixture regularly does not allow the fat to accumulate in the body even though the person may eat a high calorie diet.

CANCER: Recent research in Japan and Australia has revealed that advanced cancer of the stomach and bones have been cured successfully. Patients suffering from these kinds of cancer should daily take one tablespoon of honey with one teaspoon of cinnamon powder three times a day for one month.

FATIGUE: Recent studies have shown that the sugar content of honey is more helpful rather than being detrimental to the strength of the body. Senior citizens who take honey and cinnamon powder in equal parts are more alert and flexible. Dr. Milton, who has done research, says that a half tablespoon of honey taken in a glass of water and sprinkled with cinnamon powder, even when the vitality of the body starts to decrease, when taken daily after brushing and in the afternoon at about 3:00 P.M., the vitality of the body increases within a week.

BAD BREATH: People of South America, gargle with one teaspoon of honey and cinnamon powder mixed in hot water first thing in the morning so their breath stays fresh throughout the day.

HEARING LOSS: Daily morning and night honey and cinnamon powder, taken in equal parts restores hearing. Remember when we were kids? We had toast with real butter and cinnamon sprinkled on it!

Alternative Cooking Methods By: Monty Ellis

Thank you Monty for a great series on
Alternative Cooking Methods... SRN

As I surf through various websites in my quest to increase my
knowledge base, I often find some really interesting things. Much of
what I see from the homesteading sites along with the chicken coops
and gardens have to deal with food and cooking. Being a bona fide
foodie and a reasonably decent cook in my own right, I always smile
and have an appreciation of some of the meal preparations that I see.
Many are down right mouthwatering. Kudo’s to those folks for taking
the time to share their talents with the rest us!

But at time’s I can’t help but to think how easy it is when the cook
of the day probably has a nice homesteaders kitchen with either an
electric or gas stove. Perhaps even a wood fired cook stove!

So, what are some of the alternative methods to prepare food that is
fit to eat? Perhaps not gourmet or worthy of posting on the net, but a
healthy nutritious meal none-the-less. Below, I will attempt to
outline some alternative methods of preparing food. Many methods I
have personally done either by neccessity or just by plain curiousity.
Those that I have not had experience with I will note.

First, I would like to briefly touch on the commercially available
backpacking and general camping stoves. With the exception of the
alcohol fueled “beer can” stove, anyone that has done any camping or
packing has experience with them. Most are either propane, butane or
white gas fueled and simple to use. With these having been covered
lets get to the fun!

  • The “beer can” alcohol stove.
Since I mentioned this already I’ll cover it first. These are simple to make from
any aluminum can and use denatured alcohol as a fuel. We use them often
when pack camping or on the homestead property for simple things for heating
water or a small can of soup.
Basic Instruction for making a can stove...

  • Engine manifold cooking.
saus 2
Having spent a career in the fire service I
spent a lot of time in fire camps. One of things about fire camps is that they send you out with a ‘sack lunch’. Often these will contain something that is best heated up so they will add a piece of foil with it. Simply wrap the item up, generally a buritto, and place it on the hot exhaust manifold. Within a few minutes your ready to eat. It’s my
understanding that many off-roaders have adopted this same technique. One of these days I’m going to put a potato on my manifold when I need to make a long trip just to see if a potato will cook. I know for a fact that a burrito will heat up!

  • Hot rock boiling.
.
http://trackerofplants.com/2007/07/06/project-failure-april-30-may-6-07/
This is one that I have not personally tried. I have
read about it and have talked to some that say that they have tried it
with good results. Simply take a bucket or pot with water and toss in
rocks from a campfire. I’m a bit leery of this since the sudden
cooling could cause the rock to shatter. I know that putting a wet
rock INTO a fire will have that effect. Without further experience I
can not endorse this method. Back in 1981 I was wrong once, I suppose
it’s possible that it could happen again. Just kidding… If anyone has
any experience with this I would love to hear how it worked out.

  • Rocket stove.
Now this is a fun one and makes a great little back yard
project. Other than the sharp metal edges I think that it would make a
great kid project. We have found the the higher the chimney the more
effective the stove becomes. We have even roasted green coffee beans
over this stove!

Food Storage Tips for the new Prepper...

We are all in different places, each one has to prepare for where you are...
But you have to start NOW!

#1 Finances: You can start a food storage closet with as little as $10 dollars a week up to what ever works for your budget. If you don't have a budget and have the freedom to get it done now, go for it!

But the truth of the matter is that most of us are struggling to keep food on the table today and don't have a clue how this prepping stuff is going to work for us!

Well you can do it! Where there is will there is a way... There is more food waste in America than in any other country, nobody in America should be with out food. We have been taught how to overindulge only on the best, or so we think and we waste what others call a meal. I think every American should spend some time in a third world country and really have the opportunity to now how blessed this country has become.

Unfortunately do to our spoiled overindulgence is why we are prepping now.... History repeats itself!

People have become lazy and expect the government to keep placing entitlements in front of them, leaving as little as possible for them to be responsible for. Most people understand that the gravy train will end, somehow, someway.... and someday. And we have lots of other countries happy to help with our destruction, deciding we have had far to much for far to long!

#2 Something is better than nothing!

Food is a start , but we all know that "water we can not live without" Depending on where you live will factor in how you store and how much. Be creative, if you live in an apartment you will obviously have to do some things different than the person living rural.

Not everyone will have an opportunity to "bug out" as they say, or can move and change your whole live to accommodate prepping for something that we are very unsure of. We can feel the change in the air and our gut tells us things are changing, we see things changing all around us but no man know the time or day...

Start with simple staples, foods that fill empty bellies...as you have these items stored you can start to add more variety that will help to make bean and rice dishes more tasty. Remember if the day does come, it won't be about organics and the best of everything, it will be about keeping your stomach full. Don't think for a minute that if you get to the day you have to use your food storage that things will be the same old same old.

I see so many people thinking they will have enough to live the same old good life. Think again... Be wise with your money and what you store to fill your belly.

Below are a few articles that will get you thinking and started.... remember it's just a start once you get started you will go from a walk to a run.... Try not to focus on everything you will need all at once. Start with your food and water, then move on to an alternate cooking surface and lighting, then maybe heating or protection methods to defend you and your family. If your not a gardener think about getting started this year with seeds and producing some basics.... I think you get the picture. Find a happy medium that will work with your finances and your family. Don't wait, make a plan and start it today!

It's never to late until it's to late, and none of use know the day or hour, but we all know it's coming...

Always hope for the best, but Prepare for the worst...
