Food Fun/Ladybugs

 These are just to fun!
Great Idea for my next luncheon!
Sometimes you just need to have some fun...

Cherry tomatoes and black olives make really cute lady birds. Base is made up of sliced baguettes, cream cheese, smoked salmon and flat leafed parsley. (To help alleviate so many questions I would just like to add that in the UK, South Africa and Australia they are called Lady Birds - in the USA they are called Lady Bugs.)

The Black spots are chopped olives, the eye's are cream cheese applied with the end of a tooth pick and the antennas are the stem of the parsley. But remember be creative and make them your own, Just have fun and enjoy! SRN.

  1. These are adorable! I love Lady Bugs and would love to make these sometime. BUT please tell us: HOW do you make the DOTS on the lady bug's eyes and backs? And are the antennas made of parsley stems? I assume from the picture that the cherry tomatoes are sliced in half. MORE DETAILS, PLEASE?

    1. i'd say to cut up an olive or two for the back dots and use the cream cheese to make the eye dots and yes on the parsley stems.... thats at least what would use. don't be afraid to experiment and make it your own way. ^_^

    2. Toothpick and balsamic vinegar glaze (which is thicker)

    3. Or, you can you black sesame seeds and white ones for the eyes!

    4. I made the ladybugs tonight and learned things that work and some that don't. Once you cut the olive in half, cut off the end from which the pit was removed. That makes it fit up against the tomato much better. Cut the v-shape out of the tomato so it looks like wings. Start with spreading the cream cheese onto the bread then put the salmon or turkey or sliced ham or chicken. I actually used ham. Next put the Italian flat parsley leaves onto the meat (use a little cream cheese to make it stick. Next put on the tomato with the v-shape. Next position the olive (with extra cut mentioned above) next to the tomato. I got them both to stick to the sandwich by using the cream cheese as a glue. I didn't bother with the antenna and no one noticed. What I used for the black dots was a balsamic glaze. It was thick enough and, using a toothpick, it went pretty quickly. I tried the cream cheese for the eyes. That was VERY hard. I used Ranch Dressing and a toothpick but I think mayo would have worked even better.

  4. "Too" fun. It's "too" fun. Not "to fun".

To = I'm going to the store.

Two = Did you know there are more than "two" ways to spell that?

Too = I ate too many ladybugs.

    8. I too, am a member of the grammar police and agree the correct word should have been used. They sound alike but each has a different meaning. I guess we ran out of words so had to re-use some...

    9. Sometimes a grammar problem is just a typo... for goodness sake. Here's another - waring underwear? Is that grammar or a typo? Who cares? Do you wanna check out the lady bugs or grade blog comments?

I say just say Yay! Yay! For being able to post fun stuff on the internet! Yay! for being smart and good at English. Yay! It's Saturday!

  6. I saw a similar recipe that called for Black paste food coloring to color the cream cheese to pipe on tomato for dots and plain white cream cheese for the eyes. It also called for Chives to use as the antennas

    1. I've made these--the recipe was in Taste of Home! Very easy to do. That recipe did not call for smoked salmon--but I bet they are good with it.

    4. The grammer person was on another blog. Do you look for others to make mistakes on different blogs so you can disrespect their blogs? Just seems odd to find the same person complaining about their work.

  11. White sesame for eyes, and black sesame seeds for the spots?

  12. I'm 72 and have never heard them called "Lady Birds" in the US. In any event, I will make these this evening when family comes over.

    1. You could use devilled egg under the tomato. That might be tasty.

    2. I tried that and loved it. They looked so pretty sitting in the egg platter that I almost got upset when the guests started to eat them

  14. Bet they'd be good with a small piece of bacon instead of salmon. Not as healthy, I realize, but would be good! ;P

  15. how do you get the spots to stay in place? Don't they slide off?

  16. I think if the olives are juicy when you chop them up, the pieces will stick to the tomatoes, then let them sit out a little while and the olives will dry and be stuck.

  17. These look fab! We make toadstools out of smoked eggs and tomatoes. They always get such a laugh when served as a starter.

  18. you could do these with a fried slice of potato and melted chedder cheese instead of salmon and bacon if you have to...and do i get a grammar report???lol

  19. How about black sesame seeds for the dots on the back, rather than olive bits? A dab of olive oil would make them "stick".

Thanks for this lovely idea. I'm saving it for my next summer party!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Ok...I have one question, how do you get the little olives pieces on their backs to stick to the tomato?

  21. Think I'll make some of those this afternoon. Maybe I'll replace the flat parsley with coriander.

  23. I think these are very creative and fun to serve at any fun summer gathering.....I am going to go with trying bacon instead of the smoked Salmon....it will be a fun way to make BLT's for the kids also....just instead of using cream cheese you use mayo....I know my kids will love it!As for the Grammar Police on here...most of the people have spell checker on their computers and don't need you to tell them how to spell ....just lighten up ,it's only a recipe for gods sake.....well it's what ever.Like the person said in the details of the recipe ...make it your own way and have fun with it...so it doesn't matter if you use olive bites or sesame seeds for dots...it's what ever you want to use and put what you want to make them stick(oil or pat dry the tomato and olive pieces so they stick better)just have fun and put what ever YOU want to it....plain and simple. =-)

  25. Does anyone actually read the recipe or directions before they post a question? Geesh! lol I love the whole idea but I'm going to have to find something else other than the cream cheese so my son can have this. He can't have any dairy. I was thinking mayo but then that's so generic... unless I add herbs to the mayo... or maybe make a paste from the smoked salmon. Thanks for sharing this very cute idea!
